Winter Fuel Payment 2026: Who Qualifies and What Has Changed?
If you were born before 28 June 1960, you may receive a Winter Fuel Payment of between £100 and £300 for winter 2026 to 2027 to help with the cost of your heating bills.
The amount you receive will depend on your age, household circumstances and, in some cases, the benefits you receive.
What is the Winter Fuel Payment?
The Winter Fuel Payment was introduced in the late 1990s as a tax-free lump sum to help older people with heating costs through the winter.
If you are eligible, you will usually receive a letter in October or November confirming how much you will receive. Payments are usually made in November or December.
What has changed for Winter Fuel Payments?
The payment was originally available to all pensioners who met the qualifying criteria. In winter 2024, the payment was restricted to people receiving Pension Credit or certain other benefits.
For winter 2026 to 2027, the government has reinstated payments more widely for eligible pensioners.
How much will I receive?
The amount you receive will depend on your age, your living arrangements and whether you receive certain benefits, such as Pension Credit, Universal Credit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).
If your total income is over £35,000, HMRC will recover the full Winter Fuel Payment. This will usually be done by either updating your tax code or including the payment on your Self Assessment tax return. HMRC should make this adjustment automatically.
If you know your total income will be above £35,000, you can choose to opt out of receiving the Winter Fuel Payment. If you would like to opt out, you will need to do so before 10 October 2026.
